English ELEA: THE LOST CAPITAL OF THE THESPROTIANS The city between the Kokytos, the Acheron and the Ionian Sea — and the sudden end of a Thesprotian world Caption: High on a naturally defended plateau above the Kokytos valley, the ruins of ancient Elea preserve the remains of one of the most important urban centres of ancient Thesprotia: a fortified city whose history reached from the political world of the Thesprotian tribes to the wider networks of the Hellenistic Greek world. Text: Some ancient cities are remembered through monumental temples, marble sculpture and royal tombs.
Others survive through something quieter: walls, roads, coins, fragments of buildings and the landscape itself. Ancient Elea in Thesprotia belongs to the second category.
Today, the fortified settlement near modern Chrysavgi, on the slopes above Paramythia, covers roughly 105 stremmata and occupies a naturally protected plateau at an elevation of about 500 metres.
From this position, the ancient settlement commanded the Kokytos valley and the routes leading towards the Acheron.
Its location was anything but accidental.
The city stood within the ancient territory known as the Elaeatis, associated with the Thesprotian Eleatai.
The wider territory extended through the Kokytos valley towards the Acheron and the Ionian coast.
This geography is essential to understanding Elea.
It was not an isolated mountain settlement.
It was a city positioned between inland Epirus and the maritime world of the Ionian Sea.
Before the city The history of the landscape begins long before the fortified city of Elea.
Archaeological evidence from the wider region demonstrates settlement in much earlier periods.
At the site of Stenes near Grika, for example, remains of a small settlement dating to the Late Bronze Age have been identified. Ancient Thesprotia was a landscape of communities, villages, agricultural land and pastoral activity.
Over time, however, political organisation changed.
Larger fortified centres emerged, transforming the landscape of local communities into one increasingly structured around urban strongholds.
Elea was one of the most important products of that transformation.
The making of a fortified city The fortified settlement appears to have been founded shortly before the middle of the fourth century BC. Archaeological and historical presentations of the site associate it with the Eleatai and describe it as an early political centre of the Thesprotians.
For a period, Elea appears to have been connected with the political organisation known as the Koinon of the Thesprotians.
The city occupied a naturally defensible plateau, but its inhabitants reinforced the landscape with substantial fortifications.
The circuit walls, preserved at a considerable length, remain among the most impressive features of the site.
Earlier descriptions place the perimeter at approximately 1.55 kilometres, with particularly strong monumental construction on the northern and northeastern sides.
Elea was not merely a settlement protected by a wall.
It was an organised urban centre.
The landscape of the Acheron The importance of Elea becomes clearer when the archaeological site is placed back into its ancient landscape. The Elaeatis was not simply a political label.
It was a geographical system connected with the Kokytos valley, the Acheron and the routes leading towards the coast.
The ancient sources preserve fragments of this landscape with remarkable precision.
Thucydides provides one of the most valuable descriptions.
While describing the Corinthian fleet sailing towards Corcyra, he places Ephyra in the Elaeatis of Thesprotia and describes the harbour of Chimerium, the Acherusian lake, the Acheron and the Thyamis.
His description reads: “There is a harbour, and above it, some distance from the sea, lies the city of Ephyra in the Elaeatis of Thesprotia.” The passage matters because it reveals how closely the ancient geography connected settlements, rivers, lakes, harbours and maritime routes.
The harbour of Elaea One of the most intriguing elements of the story is the connection between the inland city and the coast. The Periplus traditionally attributed to Pseudo-Scylax mentions a harbour called Elaia in Thesprotia and states that the Acheron discharged into it. This testimony places the name Elaia directly within the maritime geography of Thesprotia.
The point is important.
Elea should not be imagined as a remote city cut off from the sea.
Its territory formed part of a larger network.
From the inland plateau to the Kokytos valley, from the Acheron to the Acherusian waters and from there to the Ionian, geography created corridors for movement, exchange and communication.
A city connected to the Greek world The archaeological record reinforces this picture.
Among the finds associated with the site are coins belonging to the Epirote League, together with issues connected with Ambracia, Aetolia, Acarnania, Corcyra, Corinth and Macedonian rulers.
Coins are more than objects of economic history.
They are traces of contact.
They suggest that the inhabitants of Elea participated in networks extending well beyond the immediate Kokytos valley.
The evidence therefore challenges any simplistic image of ancient Epirus as an isolated or culturally closed world.
Elea was part of a much wider landscape of exchange.
Streets, buildings and a forgotten sanctuary Within the fortified settlement, archaeological remains reveal roads, buildings and public structures, together with remains associated with a theatre.
These elements point to an organised urban environment rather than a simple fortified village.
Particularly intriguing is a small temple, the only temple so far identified within the ancient city.
The building consists of a pronaos, a cella and an adyton.
Yet the identity of the deity worshipped there remains unknown.
That uncertainty is itself archaeologically significant.
Archaeology is not simply the discipline of recovering answers.
It is also the discipline of knowing when the evidence does not yet allow an answer.
Elea and the mythic geography of the Acheron The relationship between Elea and the Acheron inevitably brings another dimension into the story: mythology. The Acheron, the Kokytos and the Acherusian waters belonged to the ancient Greek imagination of the underworld.
The landscape around the river became inseparable from stories of death, passage and the world of Hades.
But archaeology must maintain a careful distinction between myth and evidence.
A geographical connection between Elea and the Acheron does not automatically transform every element of the mythological tradition into historical fact.
The fascination of the region lies precisely in this overlap — a real landscape inhabited by historical communities and simultaneously transformed by centuries of myth. The Hellenistic city Elea flourished during the Hellenistic period, particularly in the third and second centuries BC. The city developed within the political and economic world of Epirus while remaining connected to wider Greek networks.
Its position gave it a double advantage.
It controlled access to the inland valleys while remaining connected, through the Acheron region, to the Ionian coast.
But the prosperity of the city did not last forever. 167 BC: the rupture In 167 BC, after the Roman victory at Pydna, the political landscape of Epirus was transformed.
According to the archaeological and official local documentation, Elea was destroyed by the Roman forces of Aemilius Paullus.
The destruction marks a dramatic break.
For generations, Elea had been a political centre, a fortified settlement and part of a regional network.
Then its urban life was violently interrupted.
The walls remained.
The landscape remained.
The roads remained.
But the city that had inhabited them was no longer the same.
The valley did not die with Elea The history of the Kokytos valley, however, did not end with the destruction of Elea.
In the Roman period, another important centre emerged nearby: Photike, a Roman colonial settlement in the northern part of the Kokytos valley.
Archaeological research has revealed Roman buildings and other remains, showing that the valley continued to play an important role after the Hellenistic period.
This is one of the most revealing aspects of the region.
Cities disappear.
Landscapes remain.
And new political centres can rise within the same geographical framework.
The question that archaeology has not yet closed The identification of the fortified settlement near Chrysavgi with ancient Elea is the prevailing archaeological interpretation and is associated with the work of the distinguished scholar Sotiris Dakaris.
But the archaeological evidence has not yet produced the single, absolutely conclusive piece of evidence — such as an unmistakable inscription naming the city or the definitive location of its mint — that would close every remaining question about the identification.
That does not diminish the importance of the site.
It makes the site more interesting. Because Elea is not an archaeological story that has reached its final page.
It remains an open field of investigation.
Every inscription, coin, building or burial has the potential to sharpen our understanding of the city and the people who lived there.
Elea is more than ruins Stand today on the plateau above Chrysavgi and look across the Kokytos valley, and the logic of the ancient settlement becomes easier to understand.
The landscape explains the city.
The mountains provided protection.
The valley provided access. The Acheron created a natural corridor towards the coast.
And beyond the coast lay the Ionian world.
Elea stood at a remarkable crossroads: between mountain and sea, between local Thesprotian communities and the wider Greek world, between ordinary life and the mythic landscape of the Acheron.
Its ruins are therefore more than stones.
They are the remains of a political landscape.
And perhaps that is why Elea remains so compelling.
Its history has not yet ended.
