Οἱ Φίλιπποι ξαναζωντανεύουν: 6,5 ἐκατ. εὐρώ γιὰ νὰ προστατευθεῖ ἕνα κομμάτι τῆς ἱστορίας. Philippi Is Coming Back to Life: €6.5 Million to Protect a Remarkable Piece of History Ἐκεῖ ὅπου ἡ ρωμαϊκὴ ἀρχαιότητα συναντᾷ τὸν χριστιανικὸ κόσμο, οἱ Φίλιπποι ἀποκτοῦν ξανὰ τὴ θέση ποὺ τοὺς ἀξίζει.

Ὑπάρχουν τόποι ποὺ δὲν χρειάζονται πολλὰ γιὰ νὰ μιλήσουν.

Ἀρκεῖ νὰ σταθεῖς μπροστά στὰ ἐρείπιά τους καὶ νὰ ἀφήσεις τὸν χρόνο νὰ κάνει τὰ ὑπόλοιπα. Οἱ Φίλιπποι εἶναι ἕνας ἀπὸ αὐτοὺς τοὺς τόπους.

Στὸν ἀρχαιολογικὸ χώρο τῶν Φιλίππων, ποὺ ἀνήκει ἀπὸ τὸ 2016 στὸν Κατάλογο Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιᾶς τῆς UNESCO, ὁ χρόνος δὲν σταματᾷ· ἀντιθέτως, γίνεται ἀφορμὴ γιὰ νέα ζωή.

Ἔργα συνολικοῦ ὕψους ἄνω τῶν 6,5 ἐκατ. εὐρώ ὁλοκληρώθηκαν, μὲ στόχο ὄχι μόνο νὰ προστατευθοῦν τὰ μνημεῖα, ἀλλὰ καὶ νὰ μποροῦν νὰ τὰ γνωρίσουν καλύτερα οἱ ἐπισκέπτες τοῦ σήμερα.

Ἕνα ἀπὸ τὰ σημαντικότερα βήματα εἶναι τὸ νέο σύστημα πυρόσβεσης καὶ πυροπροστασίας, ἔργο περίπου 3 ἐκατ. εὐρώ. Οἱ Φίλιπποι ἀποκτοῦν ἕνα ἐκτεταμένο δίκτυο προστασίας ἀπέναντι στὸν κίνδυνο τῆς πυρκαγιᾶς, σὲ μιὰ ἐποχὴ ποὺ ἡ κλιματικὴ κρίση κάνει τέτοιους κινδύνους ὅλο καὶ πιὸ ἔντονους.

Τὸ ἐντυπωσιακὸ εἶναι ὅτι ἡ νέα ὑποδομὴ σχεδιάστηκε γιὰ νὰ προστατεύει χωρὶς νὰ ἐπιβαρύνει τὸ τοπίο καὶ χωρὶς νὰ παρεμβαίνει στὰ ἀρχαιολογικὰ κατάλοιπα.

Δύο δεξαμενὲς συνολικῆς χωρητικότητας 200 κυβικῶν μέτρων, 34 πυροσβεστικὲς φωλιὲς στὸν ἀρχαιολογικὸ χώρο, ἄλλες τέσσερις στὸ μουσείο, 16 κανόνια καὶ ἐννέα πυροσβεστικοὶ σταθμοὶ δημιουργοῦν μιὰ ἀόρατη σχεδὸν ἀσπίδα γύρω ἀπὸ τὸ μνημεῖο.

Παράλληλα, μὲ περίπου 2,54 ἐκατ. εὐρώ, ὁ ἀρχαιολογικὸς χώρος ἀναδιοργανώνεται.

Βελτιώνεται ἡ πρόσβαση καὶ ἡ κίνηση τῶν ἐπισκεπτῶν, ἐνῶ συντηρεῖται καὶ ἀναδεικνύεται τμήμα τῆς πεδινῆς ὀχύρωσης.

Ὁ στόχος εἶναι ἁπλός, ἀλλὰ καθόλου αὐτονόητος: νὰ μπορεῖ ὁ σύγχρονος ἐπισκέπτης νὰ περιηγηθεῖ σὲ ἕναν τόπο μὲ τεράστιο ἱστορικὸ βάρος, χωρὶς ὁ τόπος νὰ χάσει τὴν αὐθεντικότητά του. Ἡ Βασιλικὴ Β΄ ξαναβρίσκει τὴ μορφή της Ἰδιαίτερη θέση στὸ ἔργο ἔχει ἡ πρώτη φάση ἀποκατάστασης τῆς Βασιλικῆς Β΄, ἑνὸς ἀπὸ τὰ σημαντικὰ πρωτοβυζαντινὰ μνημεῖα τῶν Φιλίππων.

Τὸ ἔργο, προϋπολογισμοῦ 740.000 εὐρώ, ξεκίνησε τὸ 2019 καὶ ὁλοκληρώθηκε τὸ 2024.

Οἱ παρεμβάσεις ἐπικεντρώθηκαν στὴ στερέωση καὶ προστασία τῶν σωζόμενων τμημάτων, ἀλλὰ καὶ στὴν καλύτερη ἀνάγνωση τῆς ἀρχιτεκτονικῆς μορφῆς τοῦ μνημείου.

Καὶ ἡ ἱστορία δὲν τελειώνει ἐδῶ.

Ἡ ἐπόμενη φάση θὰ ἐστιάσει στοὺς ὑψηλοὺς πεσσούς, ποὺ θεωροῦνται τὰ πιὸ εὐάλωτα δομικὰ στοιχεῖα τῆς Βασιλικῆς.

Ἀπὸ τὰ τείχη στὴ μνήμη Τὸ ἔργο δὲν περιορίζεται στοὺς Φιλίππους. Στὴν Κάτω Πόλη τῆς Καβάλας ἀποκαταστάθηκε τμήμα τῆς ἱστορικῆς ὀχύρωσης, ἀνάμεσα στὸ ὁποῖο καὶ ἡ ἄγνωστη μέχρι πρότινος Πύλη 12. Ἡ ἀποκατάσταση δὲν ἔφερε μόνο στὸ φῶς ἕνα κομμάτι τοῦ παρελθόντος.

Μετέτρεψε καὶ τὸν περιβάλλοντα χῶρο σὲ προσβάσιμο ὑπαίθριο χώρο πολιτιστικῶν ἐκδηλώσεων, δίνοντάς του μιὰ νέα θέση στὴ σύγχρονη ζωή τῆς πόλης.

Καὶ ἴσως αὐτὸ νὰ εἶναι τὸ πιὸ σημαντικό: ἡ πολιτιστικὴ κληρονομιὰ δὲν μένει κλεισμένη σὲ προθήκες καὶ βιβλία.

Μπορεῖ νὰ γίνει ξανὰ κομμάτι τῆς καθημερινότητας.

Τὴν ἴδια στιγμὴ, ἡ Καππαδοκικὴ Συλλογὴ τοῦ Κέντρου Καππαδοκικῶν Μελετῶν «Ἡ Ναζιανζός» περνᾷ στὴν ψηφιακὴ ἐποχή.

Περισσότερα ἀπὸ 2.000 ἀντικείμενα ἔχουν ἤδη καταγραφεῖ, ἐνῶ ἡ συλλογὴ περιλαμβάνει χιλιάδες ἔγγραφα, φωτογραφίες, γκραβοῦρες καὶ ἠχητικὰ τεκμήρια.

Ἔτσι, ἡ διατήρηση τῆς κληρονομιᾶς παύει νὰ σημαίνει μόνο «κρατῶ ὅ,τι ἔμεινε». Σημαίνει φροντίζω, τεκμηριώνω, ἀναδεικνύω καὶ παραδίδω. Οἱ Φίλιπποι, ἡ Καβάλα καὶ ἡ εὐρύτερη περιοχὴ ἀποκτοῦν μὲ αὐτὸν τὸν τρόπο ὄχι μόνο καλύτερα προστατευμένα μνημεῖα, ἀλλὰ καὶ νέες δυνατότητες γιὰ πολιτισμό, τουρισμό, ἐξωστρέφεια καὶ τοπικὴ ἀνάπτυξη.

Γιατὶ ἡ ἱστορία, ὅσο μακρινὴ κι ἂν μοιάζει, δὲν εἶναι νεκρὸ παρελθόν.

Ἐὰν τὴ φροντίσουμε σωστά, μπορεῖ νὰ γίνει ἕνα ἀπὸ τὰ πιὸ ζωντανὰ κομμάτια τοῦ μέλλοντός μας. Philippi Is Coming Back to Life: €6.5 Million to Protect a Remarkable Piece of History Where Roman antiquity meets the early Christian world, Philippi is being given a new lease on life.

Some places do not need much to tell their story.

You simply stand among their ruins and let time do the talking.

Philippi is one of those places.

The ancient site of Philippi, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2016, is now entering a new chapter.

More than €6.5 million in projects have been completed, aiming not only to protect the archaeological remains but also to make the site more accessible and meaningful to visitors today.

One of the most important interventions is a new fire protection and firefighting system, worth approximately €3 million.

At a time when climate change is increasing the threat of extreme fires, the ancient site now has an extensive protection network designed to safeguard its monuments without altering the landscape or disturbing the archaeological remains.

The system includes two water tanks with a combined capacity of 200 cubic metres, 34 fire hydrants across the archaeological site, four more in the museum, 16 water cannons and nine firefighting stations.

At the same time, a €2.54 million upgrade is reshaping the visitor experience.

Access and movement through the archaeological site are being improved, while sections of the ancient fortifications are being conserved and brought back into focus.

The idea is simple but important: allow people to experience a place of extraordinary historical significance without compromising its authenticity. The Basilica B Finds a New Lease on Life Another major part of the project is the first phase of restoration of Basilica B, one of Philippi’s most significant Early Byzantine monuments.

The €740,000 project began in 2019 and was completed in 2024.

Work focused on stabilising and protecting the surviving structures while making the architectural form of the monument easier to understand.

And the story is far from over.

The next phase will focus on the basilica’s tall piers, considered among its most vulnerable structural elements. From Ancient Walls to Living Memory The wider project extends beyond Philippi itself.

In the Lower City of Kavala, part of the historic fortification was restored, including the previously unknown Gate 12, which was uncovered during the first phase of the works.

The restoration did more than reveal another fragment of the city’s past.

The surrounding area has also been transformed into a safe and accessible outdoor cultural space, giving a once-neglected part of the city a new role in contemporary life.

And perhaps that is the most important part of the story.

Cultural heritage does not have to remain locked inside museums, books or archaeological reports.

It can become part of everyday life again.

At the same time, the collection of the Cappadocian Studies Centre “The Nazianzus” is being documented and digitally preserved.

More than 2,000 objects have already been registered, alongside thousands of documents, photographs, engravings and audio records.

Preserving heritage, therefore, is no longer simply about keeping what has survived.

It is about protecting it, documenting it, making it accessible and passing it on. For Philippi, Kavala and the wider region, these projects mean more than restored monuments.

They create opportunities for culture, tourism, education, local development and a stronger connection between the past and the present.

Because history, no matter how distant it may seem, is not simply a collection of things that happened long ago.
