Two Iberias in the Ancient Greek World: From the Caucasus to Spain The ancient Greeks knew two distant lands that carried the same name: Ἰβηρία (Iberia). One was located at the western edge of the known world, in today’s Iberian Peninsula, a region rich in myths, trade connections, and Greek contacts.
Strabo mentions that its name was connected with the river Ἴβηρος (Iberus), which gave its name to the land and its people.
The other was located far away in the East, in the Caucasus, near ancient Colchis, the mythical land of Aeëtes, Medea, and the Golden Fleece.
Strabo refers to it as “Ἰβηρία πρὸς τῷ Καυκάσῳ” — “Iberia near the Caucasus.” This shared name created, already in antiquity, questions and traditions about a possible connection between these two regions and their peoples.
Some later writers attempted to link the two Iberias through ancient migrations, genealogical traditions, and mythological narratives. The Argonautic tradition played an important role in this ancient geographical imagination. Apollonius Rhodius presents a world where Colchis, the Black Sea, the great rivers of Europe, and the distant lands of the West belonged to a wider mythological horizon.
Perhaps the most fascinating element is not only the possible relationship between the two Iberias, but the fact that Greek geographical thought created bridges between East and West through voyages, myths, and stories that survived for thousands of years.
Apollonius, however, does not state that the Colchians or the Iberians of the Caucasus were the same people as the Iberians of Spain.
This connection belongs to later interpretations that attempted to explain the shared name and the remarkable geographical coincidence.
The tradition created a symbolic pathway connecting the Black Sea with the western limits of the ancient world: Colchis (Caucasus) → Ister (Danube) → West → Pillars of Heracles → Iberia Not as a proven historical migration, but as a way in which the ancient Greeks understood their world: a network of lands connected through heroes, gods, sea voyages, and the memories of peoples.
It is nevertheless fascinating that the name Iberia for the Caucasian kingdom appears in the same region associated with Colchis and the voyage of the Argonauts.
This is why later scholars and traditions attempted to bring together these two great stories — the Iberia of the East and the Iberia of the West.
